Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her heritage – was buried under the deluge of misogyny.
She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.
She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that crossed the Kármán line of space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
The company behind the flight is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
