Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
