Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of the group following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "Including them were thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
