The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
